Unless you have been hiding under a rock somewhere, chances are you've heard of the latest creation of Nintendo's Wii Fit. If you have not, here is a brief summary. Wii Fit is the new lifestyle product for the Wii console that combines the fun of games with the benefits of exercise. The Wii was a revolution itself in the way it allowed users to interact with games using wireless motion-sensitive controls that are fun and easy to use, attractive for players and non players alike. Wii Fit takes this concept a step further with the introduction of the Wii Balance Board that comes bundled with the game.

The Wii Balance Board

The Wii Balance Board is much like a bathroom scale large, but actually contains four pressure sensors that allow determine with great accuracy the weight of a user and their position on the board. This information is sent wirelessly to the Wii console, allowing games to interpret a whole new range of movements and provides a completely new gaming experience. Wii Fit is the first game to take advantage of the Wii Balance Board and has more forty different exercises and games including yoga, muscle exercises, aerobics and balance games.

Wii Fit is an instant hit

Wii Fit was released in Japan in early December 2007 and was an instant success, selling nearly 1.8 million copies in the first four months. He was released in the UK on 25 April 2008 and almost immediately topped the game charts in the UK. Within days, retailers had sold all their allocation initial value and it is estimated that over 200 000 copies of Wii Fit were sold in the first week. In fact, a high street chain said to be changing 90 copies per minute on launch day. Wii Fit is scheduled to be released in Australia on 8 May 2008 and in the U.S. 19.

What comes next Wii Fit?

There is no denying the success of Wii Fit, even before its U.S. launch, which will undoubtedly be huge, but expect that it is ultimately Wii Balance Board that will be the great success in 2008. Wii Fit has taken Wii from being just another game console to be a product of lifestyle that does not seem out of place in the average household and this will mean a potentially huge increase in the gaming market. As the buzz and excitement of Wii Fit is turned off, many Wii Fit owners will begin to wonder what else can do with your Wii Balance Boards, and that's when things really start to get interesting.

Upcoming Wii Balance Board Games

At this time (May 1, 2008), Wii Fit is the only game available for the Wii Balance Board, but no doubt will change in coming months. Namco Bandai has already confirmed the release of We Ski in USA on May 13 and 2K Sports have Don King Prizefighter scheduled for June and the list will grow. In fact, Nintendo U.S. COO, Reggie Fils-Aime, confirmed that more than 10 games were in development.

Other games have not been confirmed, but rumors are already spreading snowboard Nintendo EA Skate, Rayman Raving Rabbids and even future Mario games. As I said, nothing has been confirmed but in any case, the Wii Balance Board games are definitely going to be a great success in 2008.
