In the practice of a chiropractor, I see many patients who regularly attend yoga classes or pilates. Both groups of patients seem to benefit from their classes yet the philosophy of both is very different. One seems to have a physical basis for teaching, while the other seems to have a spiritual base as its source.

Let a look at these two great activities and see what we can learn.

Pilates is a fitness system developed in the 20th century by Joseph Pilates in Germany. Today there are many millions of practitioners. Pilates called his method Contrology (control and Greek-logia), because he believed his method uses the mind to control muscles. The program focuses on core muscles in posture that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support to the spine.

In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine, and aim to strengthen the muscles deep torso. Essentially it is a style that involves training the muscles to improve posture and alignment. By focusing on its core strength, improve small muscles in the body so that is best able to support the larger ligaments, tendons and joints.

When our muscles are weaker than the compensation made by others that lead to instability and injury. Take your back, for example, if your posture is bad, your lower back and hips then be adjusted accordingly which means they are essentially irrelevant.

Pilates encourages you to think about how to move everyday. It increases your body awareness which in turn improves the overall agility, flexibility and strength. It helps ensure that your body is working at its optimal level all the time. There are three classes of pilates, the most popular is the training mat, where he spends much time on the floor using gravity and body weight for resistance. There is also a pilates class, incorporating weights and one using special equipment. Joseph Pilates developed these machines that allow people to do pilates moves using a resistance pulley system. Most places however, only offer training mat.

Now let's look at yoga. Yoga has been defined as follows: --
* Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness of a state of spiritual insight and tranquility that is achieved through three ...
* A system of exercises practiced as part of the Hindu discipline to promote control of the body and mind. Many people think that yoga is stretching. But while stretching is involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body by developing strength and flexibility.

This is done by conducting attitudes or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement (Vinyasa-style yoga) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect alignment of the posture.

Attitudes are a constant, but the approach to them varies depending on the tradition in which the teacher has trained. Yoga is a body of knowledge of ancient India is back over 5000 years ago. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit "word yuj" which means "to unite or integrate." The Yoga is, therefore, on the marriage of a person's own consciousness and universal consciousness.

Ancient Yogis had a belief that in order for man to be in harmony with itself and its environment, has to integrate body, mind and spirit. In these three are integrated, emotion, action, and intelligence must be in balance. The Yogis formulated a way to achieve and maintain this balance and is done through exercise, breathing and meditation - the three main Yoga structures.

In Yoga, the body is treated with care and respect as it is the main instrument of man's work and growth. Yoga exercises improve circulation, stimulate abdominal organs, and put pressure on the glands of the body system, which generally can lead to better health.

Breathing techniques were developed based on the concept that breath is the source of life. In yoga, students gain breathing control as they slowly increase their breathing. By focusing on their breathing, their minds are prepared for the next step - Meditation.

There is a general misconception that in meditation, your mind must be blank. There need be. In meditation, the students that the activities of the mind in the approach that results in a "quiet mind". By designing physical poses and breathing techniques to develop awareness of our body, Yoga helps us focus and relieves the stress of our day.

Now that we've had a brief look at the Pilates and yoga can see that the philosophy and teachings of these overlaps is consistent with the philosophy of chiropractic, stating that there are three main causes of subluxation in the body.
These are the nerve interference, outside the influence of toxic substances and stress.

Ask your chiropractor to advise you as to which of the two activities are best suited to your needs!
